DESCRIPTION:Join the McFaddin-Ward House Museum for “Extreme Sports in Historic Small Boats\,” a free public lecture presented by Pieter Roos on Thursday\, July 16\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Museum’s Visitor Center Lecture Hall (1906 Calder Avenue\, Beaumont). \nMaritime historian Pieter Roos will bring to life the thrilling stories of fast boats from the 19th and early 20th centuries\, highlighting the daring sportsmen and women who guided uniquely designed vessels to high speeds and victory. From unstable state-of-the-art “sandbagger” sailboats to nimble ice scooters and pioneering powerboats\, each boat showcases the innovation\, intensity\, and fearless spirit of sailing on the edge. \nFor more than four decades\, Roos has worked as a museum professional in New York\, New Jersey\, and New England\, serving on the staff of a wide range of institutions\, including Historic Hudson Valley\, Old Sturbridge Village\, Mystic Seaport Museum\, and the Newport Historical Society. \nThe majority of Roos’ career has been focused in the leadership role of executive director\, a prominent position he held at both the Newport Restoration Foundation in Newport\, Rhode Island\, and at the Mark Twain House and Museum in Hartford\, Connecticut. \nCurrently\, Roos is the professor of museum administration at the Cooperstown Graduate Program in Museum Studies in Cooperstown\, New York.  In addition to his work life\, Roos is a landscape artist specializing in seascapes\, and for over 30 years\, he has been carving half models of boats and ships. \nRoos holds a master’s degree from the Cooperstown Graduate Program at the State University of New York and a B.A. in anthropology from Drew University. \nMcFaddin-Ward House Museum lectures are admission-free and open to the public\, but space is limited. DESCRIPTION:Join the McFaddin-Ward House Museum for “Mostly Texas: Robert Rauschenberg at 100\,” a free public lecture presented by Kristen Clevenson on Thursday\, August 13\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Museum’s Visitor Center Lecture Hall (1906 Calder Avenue\, Beaumont). \nKristen Clevenson\, assistant curator at the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation in New York City\, will explore the extraordinary life and legacy of Texas-born artist Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008)\, showcasing the innovative works of one of the most daring and impactful artists of the 20th century\, with special attention to his “mostly Texas” disposition. \nBorn in 1925 in Port Arthur\, Rauschenberg pushed the boundaries of what defines art for six decades\, working in a diverse range of mediums\, including painting\, sculpture\, photography\, printmaking\, and performance. Throughout his trailblazing career\, he highlighted his Texas roots in numerous artworks. In October 1993\, Rauschenberg signed a letter to then-Governor of Texas\, Ann Richards\, “Love from me in Florida + mostly Texas\,” underscoring his affinity for the Lone Star State. \nClevenson has served as assistant curator at the New York-based Robert Rauschenberg Foundation since 2019. She recently curated Robert Rauschenberg: Signs and Signals (1964–94) at the Foundation\, and her research has been published by Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery. \nIn 2022\, Clevenson received her master’s degree in art history from Hunter College\, City University of New York. She also holds a B.A. from the University of Virginia. \nIn conjunction with the lecture\, the McFaddin-Ward House would like to invite a limit of 30 guests to a free guided tour of the Robert Rauschenberg exhibit at the Museum of the Gulf Coast on Friday\, August 14 at 10 a.m. Reservations are recommended to hold your place. Guridy on Thursday\, October 15\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Museum’s Visitor Center Lecture Hall (1906 Calder Avenue\, Beaumont). \nAward-winning historian and author Frank A. Guridy will explore how the United States became a sports-crazed nation during the 1960s and 70s\, emphasizing the decisive role Texas-based athletes and sports entrepreneurs played in the country’s dramatic transformation. \nGuridy is an accomplished scholar whose research has focused on sport history\, urban history\, and the history of American social movements. Currently\, he serves as a professor of history at Columbia University in New York City. \nHe is the author of numerous scholarly works on the intersection of sports\, society\, and politics\, including the books The Stadium: An American History of Politics\, Protest\, and Play (2024) and The Sports Revolution: How Texas Changed the Culture of American Athletics (2021)\, and has provided commentary on a wide variety of podcasts\, radio\, and TV programs. \nMcFaddin-Ward House Museum lectures are admission-free and open to the public\, but space is limited. DESCRIPTION:Join the McFaddin-Ward House Museum for “America 250: A Beaumont History\,” a free public lecture presented by Judith Walker Linsley on Thursday\, November 12\, at 6:30 p.m. in the Museum’s Visitor Center Lecture Hall (1906 Calder Avenue\, Beaumont). \nIn commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary\, Linsley\, a sixth-generation Southeast Texan and local historian\, will explore the fascinating story of Beaumont\, beginning with the indigenous Ishak people and traveling through the Texas Revolution\, 1901 Spindletop oil boom\, and technological and industrial expansions leading up to the modern day. \nFor nearly four decades\, Linsley has been a member of the McFaddin-Ward House Museum staff\, serving in a range of roles in interpretation\, education\, curation\, and research\, including her current role as research assistant. She has also conducted more than 100 oral history interviews for the Museum. \nA Lamar University alumna with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and a Master of Arts in History\, Linsley served as the second director of Lamar’s Center for History and Culture of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast and has been an adjunct instructor of both Texas and U.S. history at Lamar. \nShe has co-authored three books\, including the award-winning Giant Under the Hill: A History of the Spindletop Oil Discovery at Beaumont\, Texas\, in 1901 (2002) and The McFaddin-Ward House (1992)\, and numerous historical articles. \nMcFaddin-Ward House Museum lectures are admission-free and open to the public\, but space is limited.
