DESCRIPTION:Join the McFaddin-Ward House for “The Artistry of Ranching Leatherwork\, Silver and Saddlery\,” a free public lecture presented by Troy West on Thursday\, Feb. 15\, at 6:30 p.m. in the museum’s Visitor Center Lecture Hall (located at 1906 Calder Avenue\, in Beaumont). \nMaster saddle maker and Texas native Troy West will share insights into the artistry and history of ranching leatherwork\, silver\, and saddlery\, highlighting how the saddle is both a true piece of working equipment\, as well as an artform and an important part of many Texas legends. \nA true contemporary cowboy artist\, West has made a career of crafting leather masterworks. As a member of the Traditional Cowboy Arts Association\, for four decades West has created custom works for his clientele\, demonstrating his skill and passion for the art of the American Cowboy. \nWest has earned many accolades for his craftsmanship\, including winning Best of Show at the Boot and Saddlemaker Roundup five times\, receiving the Will Rogers Award for Saddlemaker of the Year\, and being commissioned by Denver\, Colorado’s 100th National Western Stock Show as one of only four U.S. saddle makers to build a special saddle to be shown and auctioned. \nMcFaddin-Ward House lectures are free and open to the public\, but space is limited. DESCRIPTION:Join the McFaddin-Ward House for “WWII Lessons and Legacies: The National WWII Museum’s Arsenal of Democracy Exhibit and Manufacturing Victory for the Allies\,” a free public lecture presented by Dr. Michael Bell on Thursday\, April 18\, at 6:30 p.m. in the museum’s Visitor Center Lecture Hall (located at 1906 Calder Avenue in Beaumont). \nExecutive Director of the Jenny Craig Institute for the Study of War and Democracy at The National WWII Museum in New Orleans\, Dr. Bell will highlight impactful artifacts and insights from one of the museum’s key galleries\, detailing how allied victory was an epic undertaking fueled by stateside industry\, ingenuity\, and the labor of millions of patriotic Americans and showcasing this often-overlooked aspect of America’s role in winning the war. \nCommissioned in Armor following graduation from West Point\, Dr. Bell is a combat veteran\, historian\, and strategist who has served at every level of the armed forces from platoon through theater army\, as well as with US Central Command\, the Joint Staff\, the West Point faculty\, and the National Defense University. As a civilian faculty member at the National Defense University\, he also served details to the Office of the Secretary of State and as a National Security Council Senior Director and Special Assistant to the President of the United States. \nDr. Bell holds an MA and a PhD in American history from the University of Maryland and an MS in national security strategy from the National Defense University\, where he was a distinguished graduate of the National War College. His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal\, two awards of the Defense Superior Service Medal\, Bronze Star\, Joint Civilian Service Commendation Award\, Joint Staff Badge\, and Combat Action Badge. \nMcFaddin-Ward House lectures are free and open to the public\, but space is limited. DESCRIPTION:RESCHEDULED: \nJoin the McFaddin-Ward House for “USA vs Art Thieves: True Tales from the FBI’s Real Indiana Jones\,” a free public lecture presented by retired FBI agent Robert Wittman on Friday\, May 17\, at 10 a.m. in the museum’s Visitor Center Lecture Hall (located at 1906 Calder Avenue in Beaumont). \nOne of the most famous art detectives in the world\, Wittman will share tales from the trenches of his long career solving art crimes with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. \nAfter joining the FBI as a Special Agent in 1988\, Wittman received specialized training in art\, antiques\, jewelry\, and gem identification\, enabling him to serve as the FBI’s investigative expert involving cultural property crime. During his 20-year FBI career\, Wittman recovered more than $300 million worth of stolen art and cultural property and has represented the United States throughout the world\, conducting investigations and instructing international police and museums in recovery and use of high asset value security techniques. \nIn 2010\, Wittman penned his New York Times bestselling memoir “PRICELESS: How I Went Undercover to Rescue the World’s Stolen Treasures”. \nMcFaddin-Ward House lectures are free and open to the public\, but space is limited. DESCRIPTION:Join the McFaddin-Ward House for “A Stitch in Time: Historic Textiles for Museums\, Movies and Designers\,” a free public lecture presented by Rabbit Goody on Thursday\, Oct. 10\, at 6:30 p.m. in the museum’s Visitor Center Lecture Hall (located at 1906 Calder Avenue in Beaumont). \nInternationally known textile historian\, designer and master weaver Rabbit Goody will detail the fascinating process of creating historically accurate textiles for museums\, movies and clothing companies. \nIn conjunction with the lecture\, Goody will offer a free Textile Identification Clinic for the community to be held at the Visitor Center on Friday\, Oct. 11\, from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. (reservations recommended). \nFor the past three decades\, Goody’s studio\, Thistle Hill Weavers located in Cherry Valley\, New York\, has been weaving luxurious custom fabrics for the museum field\, the film industry and designers of home décor and clothing lines. \nAs owner and operator of Thistle Hill Weavers\, Goody has created historically accurate textiles for historic houses such as George Washington’s Mount Vernon\, Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello and The Lincoln Birthplace. Her studio has also produced custom fabrics for numerous films\, including “Master and Commander” (2003)\, “Lincoln” (2012)\, “Road to Perdition” (2002) and “Winter’s Tale” (2014). \nA respected historian of American textiles with a remarkable ability to re-animate the past through fabric\, Goody is also the founder and director of the Textile History Forum and serves as consultant to museums and the film industry. His unique style of sound helped create a new genre of music called “swamp pop\,” songs cooked up from a gumbo-like mix of influences: country music\, rhythm and blues\, Cajun ballads and rock ‘n’ roll. The talented singer\, songwriter and guitarist continues to share his unique sound at venues throughout Southeast Texas. DESCRIPTION:Join the McFaddin-Ward House for “On The Neches with MARAD and The Reserve Fleet: MARAD Operations in the Western Gulf Gateway\,” a free public lecture presented by Brian Hill on Thursday\, Nov. 14\, at 6:30 p.m. in the museum’s Visitor Center Lecture Hall (located at 1906 Calder Avenue in Beaumont). \nBrian Hill\, director of the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) Western Gulf Gateway Office\, will provide an overview of the MARAD operations in our area and discuss the role of the Beaumont Reserve Fleet berthed on the Neches. \nBased in Houston\, Hill has served as Western Gulf Gateway director since 2012\, overseeing all ports\, waterways and intermodal connections and corridors in Texas\, Colorado and New Mexico. He is responsible for working with Texas ports and other intermodal industries and agencies to improve and strengthen the U.S. marine transportation system. \nA retired Coast Guard commander and Coast Guard attorney\, Hill holds a Juris Doctor (JD) Law degree from the St. Thomas University School of Law in Miami and a master’s degree in security studies (homeland defense and security) from the Naval Postgraduate School. \nMcFaddin-Ward House lectures are free and open to the public\, but space is limited. DESCRIPTION:The McFaddin-Ward House Education Department will offer an Oral History Homeschool Workshop for ages 5-18 on Tuesday\, November 19\, from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. in the museum’s Visitor Center (1906 Calder Avenue\, Beaumont). \nParticipants will explore how collecting\, preserving and sharing oral histories passes knowledge from one generation to the next and enhances our understanding of the past through personal experience. Activities will prepare participants for conducting their own oral histories from family members during the upcoming holiday season. \nThere is no fee for this event. Reservations are required as space is limited. \nRegistration is now full. DESCRIPTION:The McFaddin-Ward House invites the community to delight in the splendor\, sounds and spirit of the season at its annual admission-free Holiday Open House – for the first time offering a full weekend of festivities with opportunities to attend on Saturday\, Dec. 7\, and Sunday\, Dec. 8\, from 5-7 p.m. \nGuests will enjoy festive refreshments\, live music\, carolers and Santa’s Craft Workshop with children’s activities at the museum’s Visitor Center (1906 Calder Avenue in Beaumont) before making their way across the street to see the historic house shining with holiday cheer and twinkling lights. \nInside the home\, visitors will tour a visual wonderland of magnificent holiday decorations throughout the first floor while traditional Christmas music plays on the Music Room’s grand piano. Inspired by beloved songs of the season\, this year’s holiday interpretation\, “Candlelight & Carols: A Melodious Holiday with the McFaddins\,” will allow guests to experience the elegance and extravagance of an early 20th century holiday season with the McFaddin family through room designs centered around popular carols. Gorgeous gold\, shining silver and sparkling crystal light up the dining areas while glamorous party clothes and other special items like the toy train will be on display. Before departing\, guests will have the opportunity to take photos with Santa on the front porch to complete the magic memories of the evening. \nThe event is admission free and open to the public.
