SUMMARY:Summer Intern Presentations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our summer interns’ final presentations! Each will present their projects and unveil their special exhibitions. \nWednesday\, August 7\, 2013\n10 a.m.\nVisitor Center\n1906 Calder Avenue\nThe event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served. \nThe McFaddin-Ward House Internship Program provides college students with on-the-job museum experience and the opportunity to learn the inner workings of a museum—from collections management to educational outreach. This year’s interns were Arthur Garrison of Fort Worth\, Texas and Kayla Ross of Livingston\, Texas. \nArthur Garrison’s presentation will feature the McFaddin family’s contributions in the First World War. His exhibit\, “World War I: Home and Away” includes artifacts\, personal letters\, journal entries\, and family photographs to tell the story of the McFaddins and Beaumont during the war. It discusses the McFaddins’ volunteer activities and service in the United States military from 1917 until the war’s conclusion in November of 1918. \nKayla Ross will present\, “Edwardian Opulence: Lavish Living in the 1910s” to highlight the Edwardian Era\, a time of great opulence and extravagance around the world. With the renewed interest of the time period and the popularity of television programs like Downton Abbey\, the presentation will showcase the lavish lifestyle of the McFaddin family’s lifestyle in the 1910s compared to those of their British counterparts across the Atlantic. \nFor more information\, contact the museum at (409) 832-1906 and visit the interns’ blogs for an inside look at their work at the McFaddin-Ward House Museum. \nArthur Garrison: http://mcfaddin-ward-house-intern.blogspot.com/\nKayla Ross: http://mcfaddinwardhouse.tumblr.com/

It’s fun to learn about them and think about how they became part of our daily life.\nThe McFaddin-Ward House Summer Camp will teach about Southeast Texas Traditions—and how they connect with today—and with you! \nTuesday July 30 though Thursday\, August 1\n 10 a.m. until 2 p.m daily \nOpen to 8-12 year olds\nCamp Fee: $20 per child\nRegistration Deadline: July\, 24\, 2013\nThe fee includes all camp materials and supplies\, and lunch on August 1. Learn about traditional communication from the early twentieth century. Receive a pen-pal assignment and experience the fun of keeping in touch the old-fashioned way—by writing and receiving letters by mail! \nWednesday\, July 31—THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT!\nWhat did people do for fun before there were iPods\, televisions\, and video games? Can you imagine gathering around a small radio with your family after dinner to listen to your favorite “show” before bedtime? SUMMARY:Spring Community Picnic
DESCRIPTION:Come to the McFaddin-Ward House Community Picnic! Bring a picnic\, something to drink\, and a quilt or chairs\, and set up on the carriage house lawn. Enjoy a relaxing evening while listening to the sounds of Alternate Route\, a well-known local group that blends the best in country\, bluegrass\, and southern rock. Look for the “Our Town” signage\, which will be up through Thursday\, May 2\, 2013. A brochure with the participating houses will be distributed at the picnic. Visit our blog to read some of the stories already shared with the museum. \nAlso\, visitors will be able to take a tour of the newly-expanded victory garden and learn about the new program\, “Roots and Shoots: Teaching Sustainable Living to the Next Generation”! The organic teaching garden\, located behind the carriage house\, is used to educate both adults and children about growing-your-own and making-your-own. During the event\, there will be demonstrations on making seed balls and garden-fresh gazpacho. \nMark your calendar!\nContact us at (409) 832-1906 for more details.

SUMMARY:Free Tours
DESCRIPTION:Come for this opportunity to tour the house for free and have one of our Junior Interpreters as your guide! \nThe McFaddin-Ward House Junior Interpreter Program was founded in 1996 as a way to encourage teenagers to be part of a history museum. Participants must be between 13 and 18 years of age to be considered for the program. Junior Interpreters (JIs) learn the history and architecture of the main house and carriage house and how to interpret those structures and the people who lived and work there. \nJIs are a vital part of our volunteer interpreter corps. They give tours to the public on eight to ten Saturdays each year. Junior interpreters also assist with afterschool programs for children\, large public events\, and many other museum activities. \nTours are offered:\n10 a.m. until 12 p.m.\nand\n1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m. \nRemember\, it’s always best to make a tour reservation\, as our tour accommodates only small groups at a time. \nCall (409) 832-2134 for more details and to schedule a tour. \nWe’ll see you there!
