SUMMARY:They Pointed Them East First
DESCRIPTION:The history of driving cattle from Texas to faraway markets is well known and documented. Driving them EAST\, however has been largely ignored. The practice began as early as 1779\, and the trail from South Texas to New Orleans came right through the southern coastal region of the state! Could they have mingled with W.P.H. McFaddin’s own heard? \nJoin us as historian Paul Noack begins our 2017 Lecture Series with his talk entitled “Cowboys and Cattle Trails: South Texas to New Orleans”. \nPaul Noack is a past President of the Texas Chapter of the Great Western Cattle Trail Association and has done extensive research on that trail’s history. His special interest now is in the history of driving Texas cattle specifically east to the early market located in New Orleans. He is an investigator\, retired from the Attorney General’s office in Austin. Mr. Noack admits that he found it impossible to “retire” his curious\, investigative nature\, so he now puts those skills to use uncovering Texas history. \nFor more information about our 2017 Lecture Series\, go to http://mcfaddin-ward.org/mcfaddin-ward-house-rolls-new-season/ \n  \n

SUMMARY:MWH Brings"Best Book" Writer Back Home
DESCRIPTION:The McFaddin-Ward House is proud to bring New York writer Jamie Brickhouse back home to Beaumont to speak for its 2017 Lecture Series. Mr. Brickhouse is the son of Earl and Jean Brickhouse\, a prominent couple in Beaumont’s past philanthropic circles and social society. His memoir\, entitled Dangerous When Wet\, details his life growing up with a flamboyant mother\, coming out as a gay man\, plunging into addiction\, and finding redemption getting sober. He will present his lecture\, “From Page to Stage” at the museum’s Visitor Center on March 9\, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. \nAbout the Book\n“A blisteringly funny\, wrenching account of wrestling way too close to – and later loose from – booze\, sex and drugs and his adorable\, infuriating mother. Bravo!” —Mary Karr\, New York Times bestselling author of The Liars’ Club \n“Whoever said you can’t get sober for someone else never met my mother\, Mama Jean. When I came to in a Manhattan emergency room after an overdose to the news that she was on her way from Texas\, I panicked. She was the last person I wanted to see on that dark September morning\, but the person I needed the most.” \nSo begins this astonishing memoir – by turns both darkly comic and deeply poignant – about this native Texan’s long struggle with alcohol\, his complicated relationship with Mama Jean\, and his sexuality. \nThe Author and Critical Acclaim\nJamie Brickhouse is a writer\, performer\, and public speaker. He is the author of the critically acclaimed Dangerous When Wet: A Memoir of Booze Sex and My Mother. Brickhouse has been published in the New York Times\, International Herald Tribune\, Washington Post\, The Daily Beast\, Salon\, Out\, Amtrak’s Arrive\, Lambda Literary Review\, Publishers Weekly\, Shelf Awareness\, Australia’s The Daily Life\, The Fix.com\, the Latin American travel magazine Travesía\, Addiction/Recovery eBulletin\, and is a guest blogger for the Huffington Post and POZ. He has appeared on the national radio shows “The Michelangelo Signorile Show\,” “The Marilu Henner Show\,” “The Mother Love Show\,” KPFA San Francisco’s “Book Waves with Richard Wolinsky\,” and Northeast Public Radio’s “The Book Show.” \nJamie’s Solo Show\nBrickhouse\, a comedic storyteller\, debuted his solo show based on Dangerous When Wet in New York City at The Tank’s 2016 Pride Fest and will be performing it at the FRIGID NYC Festival in February and March 2017. He is a two-time StorySLAM champion of The Moth\, the acclaimed\, not-for-profit worldwide organization dedicated to the art and craft of storytelling\, a Literary Death Match champion\, and has performed at live storytelling shows throughout New York\, including Risk! He has also performed stand-up comedy and recorded voice-overs for the legendary cartoon TV show Beavis and Butthead. \n  \nMore about Jamie…\nBrickhouse spent over two decades in the publishing industry\, most recently at two major houses as head of their publicity and lecture divisions. He is founder and CEO of redBrick Agency\, a lecture bureau for authors. A native of Beaumont\, Texas\, he is a graduate of Trinity University (San Antonio) and the Radcliffe Publishing Course (now the Columbia Publishing Course). SUMMARY:Collecting Texas
DESCRIPTION: Man Behind the Bryan Museum\nOne man’s hobby is another man’s museum. Well\, at least for energy industry mogul J.P. Bryan of Houston. For more than 40 years\, Bryan and his wife Mary Jon collected a vast array of 70\,000 objects from the Old West. Fine china\, saddles\, art\, books\, documents\, artifacts from the Battle of San Jacinto. The collection traces the development of the American West across 2\,500 years of civilization. After years accumulating more\, the Bryans finally decided to move their collection from three of their homes into their new museum in Galveston. A historic building at 1315 21st Street houses the Bryan Museum. Known as the Galveston Orphans Home\, builders erected the home in 1895. Just five years later\, the great storm of 1900 heavily damaged the building where many children died. Operators rebuilt the orphanage and operated it until 1984. The remains stood for a very long time waiting to be resurrected by someone like J.P.Bryan. \nMr. Bryan will speak at the McFaddin-Ward House Visitor Center On May 11\, 2017. As always\, our lecture series is free and open to the public\, but seating is limited. Doors open at 6:00. No saving seats\, please.

SUMMARY:Free Lecture: Separate But Equal Art
DESCRIPTION:Separate But Equal Art…\nJoin us July 13th for a lecture on the history of artist co-ops in Houston in the 1930’s. The city had a white group of artists who met and worked cohesively in their own space. African American artists formed one of their own. Randy Tibbitts presents this fascinating history of the two separate but parallel groups that shaped Houston art into what it is today. \nRandy Tibbits is a retired Rice University librarian and one of the most avid collectors of early Houston art in the city. He will present at the McFaddin-Ward House Visitor Center located at 1906 Calder in Beaumont. Doors open at 6:00. The lecture begins at 6:30.

SUMMARY:Free Lecture: Hair\, a History
DESCRIPTION:Hair History Lecture and Exhibit\nLong\, short\, braided\, curled\, or straightened; hairstyles make history. They can act as forms of social communication and offer insight into our private and public personas. The well-groomed McFaddin women went to great lengths to enhance their appearances\, especially when it came to their hair. Museum intern Jennifer Kellum presents this exhibit and lecture which explores how women’s hair care\, hairstyles\, and hair adornments serve as reflections of people\, places\, and time.

SUMMARY:Free Lectures: Two Fine Topics\, Two Great Interns
DESCRIPTION:McFaddin-Ward House Gets Two Summer Interns\nThe McFaddin-Ward House has been fortunate to hire two interns this summer instead of the customary one. We are proud our museum attracts a high caliber of students who want to start their careers in a reputable place. This year we saw a plethora of qualified applicants\, and when the time came to hire one\, our decision became clear: this year we would need to hire TWO! \nIn addition to observing McFaddin-Ward House staff in its day-to-day operations\, our interns are required to focus their time and attention on one subject of their choosing and develop a presentation at the end of their stay. Intern Ashley Thornton has chosen rugs and John Brundrett is focusing on Digital Learning to interpret our history. They will present their findings at the Visitor Center on August 6 at 10:00 a.m. Please come and support these fine people. \n\nAround the World in 80 Rugs\nJoin us at the McFaddin-Ward House Visitor Center as we present a selection of rugs from the museum’s reserve collection. Hand-woven in Persia\, these early twentieth-century rugs aimed to please the Western market by creating rich colors and skillful designs. Following the presentation\, we will take an up-close look at rugs in the museum\, as we explore the techniques and functions of rugs in societies across the globe. \nPresented by Ashley Thornton\, Texas A&M University \n  \nDigital Learning and a Step into the Past\nCecelia Smith\nThe McFaddin family and the domestic employees who worked for them are important parts of the McFaddin-Ward House story. The museum is constantly enhancing this interpretation. Come and see our newest interactive interpretation of the family and then join us as we take a step back in time to Cecelia Smith’s apartment as it looked in 1984. \nPresented by John Brundrett\, Graduate Student \, University of Houston \n  \n

SUMMARY:Free Lecture - DNA Kits: Who's Been Climbing Your Tree?
DESCRIPTION:DNA: the New Way to Meet Your Relatives\nA hundred years ago when Ida Caldwell McFaddin researched her family’s genealogy\, she may have become frustrated. The methods were not easy at that time; she no doubt painstakingly poured through hundreds\, if not thousands of family documents and government records to trace her family ties. \nHow wonderful that times have changed! We have the internet AND over-the-counter DNA kits to help. Millions of people are racing to buy commercial DNA kits these days which is opening the door for millions to learn about family history\, anscestry\, and medical information. \nJoin us this month as we welcome the founder of the world’s first commercial DNA kit\, Family Tree DNA. Bennett Greenspan will speak about the new popularity of DNA science and how it’s helping people around the globs to discover their roots. \nCome early. We expect a crowd and there is no saving seats. Doors open at 6:00.
