DESCRIPTION:Many of us know the story behind the Lucas Gusher at Spindletop\, the event that changed the history of Beaumont forever\, and pushed the city into the 20th century. \nBut the town of Beaumont was born on the thickly wooded banks of the Neches River nearly a hundred years before that day in January 1901. \nJoin us September 18th\, as Rob Blain joins us to talk about his new book Early Beaumont. A native son of Beaumont—educated at both Beaumont High and Lamar University—Blain’s new book is the latest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular “Images of America” series. \nIn his talk at the McFaddin-Ward House\, Blain will detail the story of those early days in Beaumont\, from the settlers at Tevis Bluff\, to that infamous oil gusher\, on through the second Spindletop in 1925; all events that ushered in a new era in southeast Texas\, and the building of a gracious city. \nAs always\, this lecture is free and open to the public. DESCRIPTION:In 1867\, the Galveston Daily News gushed:“Texas is still the promised land. Our market is supplied with great numbers of wild geese at 50 cents\, wild ducks at 50 cents a brace. All these things are the substantials on which we live.” Less than a decade later\, the men who supplied those local markets – market hunters – saw their fledgling occupation grow into a state\, national\, and even global enterprise. \nThis is the story that Rob Sawyer tells in his book Texas Market Hunting: Stories of Waterfowl\, Game Laws\, and Outlaws\, which chronicles not just Texas’ market hunting history\, but also the state’s first conservationists and game laws\, and the showdown that followed between early game wardens and outlaw market hunters. Published by A&M University Press\, Texas Market Hunting is due out in late August. This is Rob’s second book\, following last year’s  A Hundred Years of Texas Waterfowl Hunting: The Decoys\, Guides\, Clubs\, and Places\, 1870s to 1970s. \nJoin us on Thursday\, August 14th\, as Sawyer presents his lecture on waterfowl hunting along the Texas gulf coast. \nAs always\, this lecture is free and open to the public. After completing his degrees\, he spent two years working in financial services with Blackstone Funds in New York City. Perry has since taken his wide breath of work experience and focused his attentions back at the family winery as the general manager.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for an exciting evening with Meredith Meuwly to learn about Fakes and Forgeries in the art market! \nMeredith earned her Bachelor’s degree in Classical Studies and Art History from Duke University in 2000\, and a Master’s degree in Modern Art\, Connoisseurship\, and the History of the Art Market from Christie’s Education in New York in 2001. She spent the next five years in the Christie’s New York Antiquities Department as sale coordinator and cataloguer of ancient Greek\, Roman\, Egyptian\, and Near Eastern works of art. During her time at Christie’s\, she worked on numerous high profile auctions including the Doris Duke Estate\, Ancient Egyptian Art from the Harer Family Trust\, and the John W. Kluge Morven Collection of Ancient Art. \nMeredith joined Heritage Auctions in 2007 as Senior Consignment Director in the Fine & Decorative Arts Department\, overseeing two auctions each year. In January 2010\, she became the Director of Appraisal Services\, preparing formal appraisals for more than 35 specialist categories. \nIn addition to her duties at Heritage\, Meredith participates as an appraiser for the Antiques Roadshow on PBS\, specializing in Glass\, Silver\, and Decorative Arts. Meredith is an accredited member of the International Society of Appraisers\, serving on the Fine Art committee. She is also a board member of the Foundation for Appraisal Education.

DESCRIPTION:Join us in celebrating Mamie McFaddin Ward’s 118th birthday! \nIn celebration\, the museum will be offering free tours from Tuesday\, November 5 through Saturday\, November 9\, 2013. Tours are available at 10 a.m.\, 11 a.m.\, 1:30 p.m.\, and 2:30 p.m. Tour reservations are required. Details may be obtained by calling the visitor center at (409) 832-2134. \nMamie McFaddin Ward\, the only daughter of Ida Caldwell and WPH McFaddin\, lived in the McFaddin-Ward house from 1907 until her death in 1982. In 1978\, Mamie established the Mamie McFaddin Ward Heritage Foundation to preserve the house and its contents as an educational and cultural resource. Thanks to her foresight\, the foundation provides funding for museum operations\, as well as other charitable projects in Southeast Texas. \nThe McFaddin-Ward House was built in 1905-06\, during Beaumont’s prosperous years after the Spindletop oil boom. The building and its furnishings reflect the lifestyle of the prominent family that lived in the house for 75 years. \nToday\, visitors receive guided tours of the home\, which is furnished with all-original pieces.
