SUMMARY:Free Lecture
DESCRIPTION:YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU’LL FIND!  \nADVENTURES IN COLLECTING ANTIQUES\, PORCELAIN\, POTTERY\, AND GLASS  \nThe 2016 McFaddin-Ward House Lecture Series continues with a special evening of antiques. If you love collecting old objects\, you won’t want to miss this presentation. Antique\, Art\, Pottery\, Porcelain\, and Glass expert\, David Lackey\, brings his knowledge and talent to the McFaddin-Ward House in its continuing 2016 Lecture Series. \nSpeaker\, David Lackey graduated from Baylor University\, dealt in antiques for several years\, then did intensive study at Christie’s Fine Arts in London. He has been a collector for most of his life\, starting at the young age of 6 when he received an antique penny bank in the shape of a house. This simple gift ignited David’s passion for collecting old objects\, and he began to shop with his parents at flea-markets and garage sales. By the age of 12\, he was selling at weekend antiques fairs and to other dealers who appreciated his keen eye for quality items. \nDavid Lackey presently owns an antique shop in Houston\, creates his own art\, and can be seen appraising collectibles on the enormously popular PBS series Antiques Roadshow. Please join us for this enlightening lecture and find out how he determines what your special “something” is worth. \nFor more information on David Lackey\, please visit our news site at http://mcfaddin-ward.org/category/news/ \nOur lectures are FREE and open to the public\, but seating is limited. We take the first 90 visitors who arrive. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. \n

SUMMARY:Art Greats of Southeast Texas Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The art scene in Southeast Texas is alive and well. Does that surprise you? For more than a century\, great masters have lived among us\, leaving behind brilliant works and respected reputations. We at the McFaddin-Ward House are proud to keep legacies alive through education and community events. This month is no exception as our 2016 Lecture Series continues. The McFaddin-Ward House is excited to host leading museum authority\, Sarah Beth Wilson\, who will speak about Southeast Texas’ hidden treasures in her lecture entitled “Golden Triangle Greats: A History of the Arts in Southeast Texas”. \n \nThe Golden Triangle is known around the world for its crucial role in oil refining. It all started when the Lucas Gusher blew in 1901 and birthed the modern petrochemical industry. What most locals don’t know is that Southeast Texas has been a hotbed for artists since the 1800’s…those who possess a wealth of original genius. Ms. Wilson’s presentation will explore the genesis of the Golden Triangle art scene. She will highlight pivotal figures like John Alexander\, Katherine Green Baker\, Patricia and David Cargill\, Maudee Carron\, Lorene David\, Frank Gerrietts\, Lilian Hayes\, Herman Hugg\, Jerry Newman\, Will-Amelia Sterns Price\, Robert Rogan\, Richard Stout\, Lynn Sweat and many others. These greats helped establish Southeast Texas as an integral part of the history of art in the Lone Star state. \nSarah Beth Wilson is Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas\, http://www.amset.org/. Prior to coming here\, she worked at various galleries in Houston and taught art history with Lone Star Community College. She received her Bachelor of Arts in both art history and museum studies from Baylor University\, Waco\, Texas (2006)\, and attended Texas Christian University for graduate school\, where she was awarded a full fellowship\, travel grants and graduated with her Masters of Arts in art history (2009).

SUMMARY:Film Documentary - Artist Frank Reaugh
DESCRIPTION:McFaddin-Ward House Features Film Documentary\nThe McFaddin-Ward House takes its 2016 Lecture Series on the road this month with a film documentary about forgotten artist Frank Reaugh. Experts consider Reaugh (prounounced Ray) to be one of Western art’s most prolific creators. He painted more than 7\,000 pieces\, yet when he died\, most people had never heard of him. The Texas art scene has recently renewed its interest in Reaugh\, largely due to a recent film documentary about his life and works. “Frank Reaugh: Pastel Poet of the Texas Plains” pays tribute to a great artist and teacher. Its producer\, Marla Fields\, will discuss her film at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas on August 18th. The McFaddin-Ward House is proud to share the event at AMSET’s larger venue. \n“We anticipate a large crowd for this particular lecture\,” McFaddin-Ward House Museum Director\, Allen Lea said. “The Art Museum is lovely and will create the perfect atmosphere for this wonderful screening.” \nAn Artist Unknown\nFrank Reaugh produced thousands of vivid pastels of the Texas Plains. Unlike other painters\, though\, he focused on animals rather than cowboys. Each summer he would bring a group of students on “Sketch Trips” to far west Texas and teach them his methods. Many call him the “Dean of Texas Painters”. \n“What’s remarkable about Frank Reaugh is that very few of us knew what’s remarkable about him\,” critic and novelist Michael Ennis remarks in Fields’ documentary. Now\, we’re beginning to\, again. \nHe was still working into his late 70s\, but by then the art world had passed him by. \n“People forgot him before he was ever done painting\,” art collector Bill Cheek said. \nHow could artists forget someone so talented\, creative and giving? That’s what filmmaker Fields wanted to know after reading an article about him. “In his final days he became a ward of the city\, and that just struck me\,” she said. “I just couldn’t believe he wasn’t more well-known.” \nA former radio DJ in Temple and Paris (Texas) and now a freelance video producer living in Frisco\, she set out to learn all she could about him. Her superb documentary\, five years in the making\, reintroduces Reaugh to art lovers and to his fellow Texans. \nLearn more at http://marlafields.com/frankreaugh/

SUMMARY:Free Lecture: Tiffany Art Glass Expert to Speak at Museum
DESCRIPTION:Tiffany Art Glass\nThe McFaddin-Ward House is proud to bring a Tiffany Art Glass expert to its 2016 Lecture Series. Paul Doros authored a book called The Art Glass of Louis Comfort Tiffany describing some of the artist’s most celebrated pieces. He will speak about Tiffany at an upcoming lecture on September 22 at the McFaddin-Ward House Visitor Center. \nWho was Louis Comfort Tiffany?\nLouis Comfort Tiffany was an American artist and designer who worked in the decorative arts. Artists and collectors know him best for his work in stained glass\, and historians associate Tiffany most often with the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements. He considered his Favrile glass his signature artistic achievement which he produced between the 1890s and 1920s. Now highly collectible\, the glass underscores one-of-a-kind quality. Tiffany’s glass workers blew and decorated each piece by hand. \nPaul Doros’ book explores the full range of Tiffany Studios’ diverse and innovative styles. In his talk\, Doros will showcase photographs of Tiffany’s world-class pieces. He will highlight a variety of unique masterpieces like the delicate Flowerform vases and the dramatic Lava vases. Doros will also give a history of the Tiffany glasshouse where gifted glass workers and scientists worked. He will show never-before-published documents and archival photographs of Tiffany and his family. The Art Glass of Louis Comfort Tiffany showcases the mastery and vision behind remarkable works. \n  \nAbout the Speaker\nPaul Doros is a renowned scholar on the life and work of Louis Comfort Tiffany. He was the first curator of glass at the Chrysler Museum of Art\, located in Norfolk\, Virginia\, and authored the 1978 publication\, The Tiffany Collection of the Chrysler Museum at Norfolk. Experts widely consider this collection the finest of Tiffany blown vessels that any public institution holds. He went on to work in the Twentieth Century Decorative Arts Department of Christie’s from 1978 to 1988. Paul hosts The Tiffany Studios Resource Center web site (tiffanystudios.org) and has even appeared in a segment of the PBS program “History Detectives.” \nYou may meet Mr. Doros after the his lecture at a reception which the museum will hold in his honor. \nFor more information about the book and the author\, please go to http://www.tiffanystudios.org/ \n

SUMMARY:Free Lecture: Great Houses of Havana
DESCRIPTION:Inside Great Houses\nHermes Mallea’s book\nTake a tour inside Havana’s Great Houses! American tourism was all but lost there until recently. With renewed diplomatic and economic ties to Cuba and increased plane flights to and from there\, tourism is souring. Americans are getting a first look at some of the country’s fabulous architecture. \nThrough the Eyes of Hermes Mallea\nHermes Mallea is an architect and author of the book Great Houses of Havana. He is also partner in a design firm based in New York known as the (M)Group. With family roots from Cuba\, Mallea has written an elegant book that captures the past century of Cuban Architecture. \nAmazon writes: \nGreat Houses of Havana celebrates one hundred years of creativity\, design\, and style that made the city “the Paris of the Caribbean.” For four hundred years\, Havana was the center of Spanish trade in the western hemisphere. With the expansion of the sugar industry\, independence from Spain\, and North American investment\, Havana became a city of great wealth\, great style\, and great houses in a vocabulary that was a unique amalgam of European\, American\, and Caribbean elements. \nGreat Houses of Havana traces the evolution of the Cuban home from the classic\, Spanish colonial courtyard house to the “Tropical Modernist” villas of the 1950s—houses reflecting international architecture trends while remaining true to the Cuban tradition. \nCuba’s social history is woven throughout the book. Vintage photographs illustrate Havana’s sophisticated lifestyle—the masked balls\, yacht club picnics\, and dynastic weddings of fashionable Cubans and their international guests. Popular cafes\, hotels\, theaters\, and weekend resorts are also featured\, creating a view of the privileged life inside the gated mansions of the city’s grandest neighborhoods. \nThe Lecture\nPlease be our guest as Hermes Mallea takes us on our own personal tour of the beautiful homes of Havana.  Mallea will speak at our Visitor Center on November 3\, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. We hope you’ll join us for his lecture\, book signing and  reception.

SUMMARY:They Pointed Them East First
DESCRIPTION:The history of driving cattle from Texas to faraway markets is well known and documented. Driving them EAST\, however has been largely ignored. The practice began as early as 1779\, and the trail from South Texas to New Orleans came right through the southern coastal region of the state! Could they have mingled with W.P.H. McFaddin’s own heard? \nJoin us as historian Paul Noack begins our 2017 Lecture Series with his talk entitled “Cowboys and Cattle Trails: South Texas to New Orleans”. \nPaul Noack is a past President of the Texas Chapter of the Great Western Cattle Trail Association and has done extensive research on that trail’s history. His special interest now is in the history of driving Texas cattle specifically east to the early market located in New Orleans. He is an investigator\, retired from the Attorney General’s office in Austin. Mr. Noack admits that he found it impossible to “retire” his curious\, investigative nature\, so he now puts those skills to use uncovering Texas history. \nFor more information about our 2017 Lecture Series\, go to http://mcfaddin-ward.org/mcfaddin-ward-house-rolls-new-season/ \n  \n
