SUMMARY:McFaddin-Ward House Museum Lecture Series Presents “Howard Hughes and the Creation of Modern Hollywood” By Jeffrey Richardson
DESCRIPTION:Join the McFaddin-Ward House Museum for “Howard Hughes and the Creation of Modern Hollywood\,” a free public lecture presented by Jeffrey Richardson on Thursday\, September 18\, at 6:30 p.m. in the museum’s Visitor Center Lecture Hall (1906 Calder Avenue\, Beaumont). \nHoward Hughes was an aviator\, industrialist\, and eccentric\, but he was also the most important movie producer during the golden age of Hollywood. Author and McFaddin-Ward House Museum Executive Director Jeffrey Richardson will show how Hughes used his enormous wealth to revolutionize the industry\, onscreen and off. From starlets to scandals\, it is a story of sex\, violence\, movies\, and money told through one of the most colorful characters in American history. \nWith an extensive background in museum management and historic preservation\, Richardson has held key positions at a diverse range of cultural institutions across the country\, from regional history museums and historic houses to Native cultural centers and public gardens. In March 2025\, he assumed the role of executive director at the McFaddin-Ward House Museum\, where he looks to build upon the organization’s remarkable history and legacy. \n“I am honored to be the executive director of the McFaddin-Ward House\,” Richardson noted\, “and I am excited to be the first lecturer for the fall 2025 season. Howard Hughes was a native Texan and true Renaissance man. I look forward to discussing an often-overlooked chapter in his remarkable career.” \nIn 2019\, Richardson wrote Howard Hughes and the Creation of Modern Hollywood\, the first in-depth profile of Hughes and his impact on the film industry. He is also the author of Colt: The Revolver of the American West and has appeared as an expert commentator on over a dozen television programs\, including Mysteries at the Museum\, Pawn Stars\, Storage Wars\, and History Detectives. \nMcFaddin-Ward House Museum lectures are admission-free and open to the public\, but space is limited. Doors open at 6 p.m. For more information\, call 409-832-2134. \nFor those unable to attend\, the full lecture will be available for viewing on the museum YouTube Channel (youtube.com/@mcfaddinwardhouse)\, Facebook (facebook.com/McFaddinWardHouse) and website (mcfaddin-ward.org/about/videos) after the event.

SUMMARY:McFaddin-Ward House Lecture Series Presents “Stories of the 1900 Galveston Storm: What We Have Learned” By Shelly Kelly and Judge Jeff Branick
DESCRIPTION:Join the McFaddin-Ward House Museum for “Stories of the 1900 Galveston Storm: What We Have Learned\,” a free public lecture presented by Shelly Kelly\, followed by community storm plan updates from Judge Jeff Branick\, on Thursday\, Oct. 9\, at 6:30 p.m. in the museum’s Visitor Center Lecture Hall (1906 Calder Avenue\, Beaumont). \nKelly\, an independent researcher and author\, will share stunning stories of the devasting hurricane that unexpectedly struck Galveston in 1900\, reflecting on the lasting lessons it left behind and examining how the storm’s impact was magnified by a lack of preparedness. Judge Branick will follow with an overview of modern hurricane forecasting and current emergency response strategies in Southeast Texas. \nA certified archivist with a master’s degree in applied history\, Kelly began her archival career at the Galveston & Texas History Center\, located in Galveston’s Rosenberg Library\, where she worked closely with 1900 Storm collections and researchers. She has co-edited an award-winning book on the notorious hurricane\, Through a Night of Horrors: Voices from the 1900 Galveston Storm\, and her archival outreach on the subject was recognized with a national award from the Society of American Archivists. Since 2020\, Shelly has worked as an independent researcher\, writer\, and oral history consultant. \nJudge Branick is a former attorney and partner at Provost Umphrey Law Firm. He has served as the elected county judge of Jefferson County since assuming office in 2011. Over the past 14 years\, he has worked tirelessly on coastal erosion protection and hurricane storm surge protection for coastal residents. Judge Branick has helped lead the county through several hurricanes and disasters\, and he will share his considerable insight into the importance of storm preparedness. \n
