SUMMARY:Free Lecture - DNA Kits: Who's Been Climbing Your Tree?
DESCRIPTION:DNA: the New Way to Meet Your Relatives\nA hundred years ago when Ida Caldwell McFaddin researched her family’s genealogy\, she may have become frustrated. The methods were not easy at that time; she no doubt painstakingly poured through hundreds\, if not thousands of family documents and government records to trace her family ties. \nHow wonderful that times have changed! We have the internet AND over-the-counter DNA kits to help. Millions of people are racing to buy commercial DNA kits these days which is opening the door for millions to learn about family history\, anscestry\, and medical information. \nJoin us this month as we welcome the founder of the world’s first commercial DNA kit\, Family Tree DNA. Bennett Greenspan will speak about the new popularity of DNA science and how it’s helping people around the globs to discover their roots. \nCome early. We expect a crowd and there is no saving seats. Doors open at 6:00.

SUMMARY:Free Lecture: Hair\, a History
DESCRIPTION:Hair History Lecture and Exhibit\nLong\, short\, braided\, curled\, or straightened; hairstyles make history. They can act as forms of social communication and offer insight into our private and public personas. The well-groomed McFaddin women went to great lengths to enhance their appearances\, especially when it came to their hair. Museum intern Jennifer Kellum presents this exhibit and lecture which explores how women’s hair care\, hairstyles\, and hair adornments serve as reflections of people\, places\, and time.

SUMMARY:Art Greats of Southeast Texas Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The art scene in Southeast Texas is alive and well. Does that surprise you? For more than a century\, great masters have lived among us\, leaving behind brilliant works and respected reputations. We at the McFaddin-Ward House are proud to keep legacies alive through education and community events. This month is no exception as our 2016 Lecture Series continues. The McFaddin-Ward House is excited to host leading museum authority\, Sarah Beth Wilson\, who will speak about Southeast Texas’ hidden treasures in her lecture entitled “Golden Triangle Greats: A History of the Arts in Southeast Texas”. \n \nThe Golden Triangle is known around the world for its crucial role in oil refining. It all started when the Lucas Gusher blew in 1901 and birthed the modern petrochemical industry. What most locals don’t know is that Southeast Texas has been a hotbed for artists since the 1800’s…those who possess a wealth of original genius. Ms. Wilson’s presentation will explore the genesis of the Golden Triangle art scene. She will highlight pivotal figures like John Alexander\, Katherine Green Baker\, Patricia and David Cargill\, Maudee Carron\, Lorene David\, Frank Gerrietts\, Lilian Hayes\, Herman Hugg\, Jerry Newman\, Will-Amelia Sterns Price\, Robert Rogan\, Richard Stout\, Lynn Sweat and many others. These greats helped establish Southeast Texas as an integral part of the history of art in the Lone Star state. \nSarah Beth Wilson is Curator of Exhibitions and Collections at the Art Museum of Southeast Texas\, http://www.amset.org/. Prior to coming here\, she worked at various galleries in Houston and taught art history with Lone Star Community College. She received her Bachelor of Arts in both art history and museum studies from Baylor University\, Waco\, Texas (2006)\, and attended Texas Christian University for graduate school\, where she was awarded a full fellowship\, travel grants and graduated with her Masters of Arts in art history (2009).

SUMMARY:Lecture: "Early Beaumont"
DESCRIPTION:Many of us know the story behind the Lucas Gusher at Spindletop\, the event that changed the history of Beaumont forever\, and pushed the city into the 20th century. \nBut the town of Beaumont was born on the thickly wooded banks of the Neches River nearly a hundred years before that day in January 1901. \nJoin us September 18th\, as Rob Blain joins us to talk about his new book Early Beaumont. A native son of Beaumont—educated at both Beaumont High and Lamar University—Blain’s new book is the latest addition to Arcadia Publishing’s popular “Images of America” series. \nIn his talk at the McFaddin-Ward House\, Blain will detail the story of those early days in Beaumont\, from the settlers at Tevis Bluff\, to that infamous oil gusher\, on through the second Spindletop in 1925; all events that ushered in a new era in southeast Texas\, and the building of a gracious city. \nAs always\, this lecture is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6 p.m.\, and the talk begins at 6:30. A reception will follow\, along with an opportunity to buy signed copies of Early Beaumont. Call (409) 832-1906 for more information.

SUMMARY:Lecture: "Ducks on the Menu -- Stories from Texas Market Hunting"
DESCRIPTION:In 1867\, the Galveston Daily News gushed:“Texas is still the promised land. Our market is supplied with great numbers of wild geese at 50 cents\, wild ducks at 50 cents a brace. All these things are the substantials on which we live.” Less than a decade later\, the men who supplied those local markets – market hunters – saw their fledgling occupation grow into a state\, national\, and even global enterprise. \nThis is the story that Rob Sawyer tells in his book Texas Market Hunting: Stories of Waterfowl\, Game Laws\, and Outlaws\, which chronicles not just Texas’ market hunting history\, but also the state’s first conservationists and game laws\, and the showdown that followed between early game wardens and outlaw market hunters. Published by A&M University Press\, Texas Market Hunting is due out in late August. This is Rob’s second book\, following last year’s  A Hundred Years of Texas Waterfowl Hunting: The Decoys\, Guides\, Clubs\, and Places\, 1870s to 1970s. \nJoin us on Thursday\, August 14th\, as Sawyer presents his lecture on waterfowl hunting along the Texas gulf coast. \nAs always\, this lecture is free and open to the public. It begins at 6:30 pm\, with doors opening at 6 o’clock. Call (409) 832-1906 for more information. \n\n

SUMMARY:Summer Intern Presentations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our summer interns’ final presentations! Each will present their projects and unveil their special exhibitions. \nWednesday\, August 7\, 2013\n10 a.m.\nVisitor Center\n1906 Calder Avenue\nThe event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served. \nThe McFaddin-Ward House Internship Program provides college students with on-the-job museum experience and the opportunity to learn the inner workings of a museum—from collections management to educational outreach.
